Arolytics co-founders involved in methane emissions research
Research the Arolytics founding team was involved in alongside others, while at St. Francis Xavier University, was recently published in Science of the Total Environment.
The study combined multiple measurement methodologies - truck, OTM (stationary), and OGI (handheld) to compare and contrast methane emissions from sweet (H2S-free) and sour (H2S-bearing) heavy oil production sites in Lloydminister & Peace River, Alberta.
In sour developments, gases are carefully managed using control equipment. It’s here we expect methane benefits - because H2S and methane are co-emitted. The study found methane levels were around 3x lower in the sour development despite higher levels of oil production. Emissions were also improving annually, largely in response to tightening area-based air emissions regulation.
It’s clear oil and gas producers can successfully manage and reduce air emissions, while control regulation is supporting this downward trajectory in emissions.
